posted Nov 8, 2019, 7:57 PM by San Gabriel Tennis Club

10/27/19 - We had a wonderful weather for our inter-club tournament against Temple City.  Our club fought hard and some players played multiple games but lost 7-3 on match count.  We were able to revive our spirits as we had the traditional chicken lunch with green and potato salad with fruits provided by Temple City.  Lots of fun had by all.

Shadow Mountain Yearly Resort Trip 2019

posted Nov 8, 2019, 7:53 PM by San Gabriel Tennis Club

It was a wonderful weekend had by all as the weather cooled down just in time for our getaway tennis vacation.  Some players came early Friday and was able to play some tennis under the lights in the evening.  As the inter-club rolled around Saturday, SGTC was able to win 4 out of 5 matches to win this year's interclub.  Good job to all.  Saturday night we had our traditional dinner catered atop the pro shop.  Cash prizes for raffle was won by Mike L., Lisa S., and Chun won a travel tennis bag.  Left right center dice game was played and players took home some additional cash.  Afterwards, most players decided to work off dinner by hitting some more tennis balls!  On Sunday, we had a round robin clay tennis tournament but some courts were still mushy from the overnight cool temperatures so only one was playable.  But we tried to hit as much as we could on clay Sunday.  Afterwards some players continued to play pickleball for the remainder of the morning until room checkout.  It was a lot of fun and we hope to come back again next year!

Wilson Demo Day (5-18-2019)

posted May 19, 2019, 4:14 PM by San Gabriel Tennis Club

San Gabriel Tennis Club was lucky enough to have Wilson Demo Day on 5/18/2019. Wilson was nice enough to bring demo rackets to SGTC for everyone to try.  In conjunction with Jackie from LA tennis group of Meetup, there were approximately 80 visitors today (maybe more). We had drills on some courts, liveball play on others, games, cardio and ball machine exercises on another court. Raffle prizes were given out as well as a brand new Wilson Blade racket. It was a lot of fun had by all, maybe next time we can get Babolat or Yonex to come pay us a visit.

SGTC vs. Victory Park Interclub Tournament (5-11-2019)

posted May 18, 2019, 10:41 AM by San Gabriel Tennis Club

The small chance of showers became partly cloudy skies when matches started play this morning.  Tony W. provided the snacks and refreshments for SGTC members and Victory Park (Pasadena High) players.  We played men's singles and doubles and mixed doubles.  SGTC won most of the mixed doubles matches but unfortunately lost most of the men's doubles and all of the men's singles. It was a tough match up as Pasadena prevailed in overall games, 111-83.  We will try again next time as we have plans to play again soon.

SGTC vs. Smith Park Interclub Tournament (4-20-2019)

posted Apr 24, 2019, 8:40 PM by San Gabriel Tennis Club   [ updated Apr 24, 2019, 8:41 PM ]

It was an overcast day this morning but far from gloomy as SGTC came with a stronger lineup this morning to defeat Smith park group 4-0.

Brian and Mike won 6-0, 6-4
Alvin and The won 6-0, 6-2
Robert L and Simon P won 6-4, 6-3
Andrew and Simon T won 6-3, 6-2

This same group defeated us last time a couple months ago so they will undoubtedly comeback stronger next time.

The opponents unfortunately had only 4 teams this morning so SGTC members played a round robin event amongst members.

Thank you to Tan and Lisa and Brian for the pastries and Tony for putting it all together.  And thank you everyone for coming out and getting your tennis in.

Also thanks to Tony W. for arranging all the snacks and refreshments, couldn't have done it without you.  Also, thanks goes to everyone for their patience as Tony L worked diligently to even up the pairings.

San Gabriel Tennis Club's 2018 Shadow Mountain Weekend Getaway

posted Sep 30, 2018, 5:33 PM by San Gabriel Tennis Club   [ updated Sep 30, 2018, 5:54 PM ]

San Gabriel Tennis Club just had it's yearly tennis getaway, which was held the weekend of 9-28-2018 to 9-30-2018. On Friday, members arrived to Shadow Mountain at various times to check into the resort and enjoy some night tennis along with dinner. On Saturday morning, most members enjoyed an inter-club tournament against the members of the Shadow Mountain Resort. It was a hot and humid day, where the Shadow Mountain resort members won out against us. We will try harder next year! There was also some tennis coaching and drills, where the teaching pro gladly gave some free lessons to several of our club members. Also, alot of our members enjoyed playing some pickle-ball, which is a miniature version of tennis with smaller rackets and different types of balls. During the evening, members enjoyed our traditional BBQ which was held at the main cafe and specially prepared by Shadow Mountain staff. After dinner we held our traditional raffle and played our special game of 50/50. This year, our beloved long time member and advisor Steve M. won the jackpot! On Sunday morning, everyone enjoyed another day of morning tennis and pickle-ball in the great Palm Springs weather after which members went back home.

We again thank all those who came to our yearly event to have a fun weekend of tennis and relaxation!

SGTC's 2017 Year End Holiday Party

posted Dec 23, 2017, 11:01 AM by San Gabriel Tennis Club

Members of SGTC along with their family and guests celebrated the end of another year of tennis and friendship at the annual holiday party on Sunday evening, December 10, 2017. It is quite surprising how your tennis friends look like outside of their ‘tennis’ clothes!  We enjoyed an Italian dinner at Villa Italia Ristorante in Duarte.  We feasted on salad, calamari, veal, chicken, salmon and eggplant Parmigiana and cake.

President Ben Lu formally opened the party with welcoming remarks at 5:30. After dinner Ben introduced the club’s board for 2018. Board members for 2018 are:

Ben Lu – President

Mike Lu – Vice-president

Richard Wun – Secretary

Rob Nyugen - Treasurer

Tony Wong – social coordinator and scramble coordinator

Alvin Lee – WebMaster

Ben awarded prizes to the scramble winners: Tri Kha first place for men and Tony Law (presented on court) second place for men.  Since Rowena Kousakis could not attend the party, she received her award on court Saturday for first place for women.

The club held the traditional 50/50 raffle. This year, Janet Tapia won the first place prize, Tony Wong won second place and Richard Wun won third place. We also had a drawing for the door prizes. Almost everyone received one of the many prizes donated by members, and John Machikawa won the grand prize, a new Wilson Burn tennis racket.

Sandy Lee introduced us to a game. Each person picked a partner. While the person was not watching, the partner changed three things about her appearance such as removing her glasses or rolling up one sleeve. Then the person had to figure out what her partner had changed. The point of the game is that we must be aware of and open to change as well as be observant of your significant others!

We said “good-bye” and “Merry Christmas” to each other about 8:30.

“Thank you” to Tony Wong for finding Villa Italia and setting up the party.

Happy tennis in 2018!

SGTC Winter Interclub Tournament vs. Arcadia Tennis Club (12-9-2017)

posted Dec 23, 2017, 10:52 AM by San Gabriel Tennis Club   [ updated Dec 23, 2017, 10:53 AM ]

It was a great winter day to play tennis as SGTC hosted an Arcadia group captained by Andy C. We had breakfast snacks, dim sum and refreshments as over 44 players from both sides came out to play. We played two out of three sets on each court and some played more after that.  Since we had more than enough players, we rotated some teams after one set and some waited patiently for their turn.  When it came time to play, the Arcadia group came with a strong set of players, as they won the interclub against SGTC.  We hope to have another opportunity to play them again in the future.  Thank you Andy for visiting us this year!
