Forty-five people attended the SGTC annual weekend away at Shadow Mountain on September 29th 2017 through October 1st 2017. Thirty-two tennis players along with spouses and children came out to the fantastic tennis resort in Palm Desert. Most drove from the Los Angeles area but Sandy M. came from Honolulu, Lily N. came from Sacramento, and James B. came from Pittsburgh. Many of the people arrived on Friday evening to play on the lighted courts.

On Saturday morning, SGTC played a tournament with members of the Shadow Mountain Tennis Club. It was a close match, but Shadow Mountain finished on top at six lines to four for SGTC. After a light lunch for the two teams, Lily N. introduced many members to pickle ball which is played with wooden paddles and a plastic ball on a small court – sort of like ping pong on a miniature tennis court. People spent the afternoon swimming in the huge pool, napping, or shopping.

After, on Saturday evening, members gathered for a Wild West BBQ catered by the Shadow Mountain Café. SGTC paid one-third of the cost of the dinner , and members paid two-thirds.

Following dinner, we all played the Left, Right, Center dice game, which is a tradition at the SGTC weekend away. Tri Kha won at table one and Amber Marsden won at table two. Then, we had a raffle. Four people won sets of tennis strings. Peter Chu’s son Jacob was the proud winner of the grand prize; a tennis bag almost as big as he is. Of course, there had to be a fifty-fifty raffle to conclude the dinner program. We had 3 winners as follows:

James B.(1st place which James shared with the small children) split the winnings. The other half of the raffle sales supports SGTC.

Rowena (2nd place)

Mike L.: (3rd place and Mike donated the money back to the club)

After dinner, many people played tennis on the beautiful lighted courts in the cool desert evening. On Sunday morning, members played tennis and pickleball before heading home. We are looking forward to another wonderful weekend at Shadow Mountain next year.

A big “Thank you” to Jessie and Lily for providing photos for the SGTC website. Please see the Photos section for all the images of the SGTC Shadow Mountain trip.
