As the forecasted rains hit the San Gabriel Valley area, SGTC members in Port Hueneme enjoyed a cool, comfortable tennis weather during the weekend of July 19-21, 2013.

Members stayed at the Casa Via Mar Inn & met Saturday morning at the Inn’s tennis courts to play round-robin tennis.  A break was called and some of the players walked to nearby Roxbury Deli for lunch.  At 1:00 p.m., players traveled to the Oxnard Tennis Center (OTC) to play against & with OTC players.  SGTC members participating paid $10 per player.  SGTC provided tennis balls & drinks while Oxnard provided other refreshments.  Thanks to SGTC Mike Lu for coordinating the afternoon matches with OTC coordinator, Mark Campbell.

On Saturday evening, members/guests dined at the Inn’s Hospitality Room, with El Pollo Loco chicken dinner, arranged by Anna Gee.  The group celebrated Amber’s birthday w/a Sock-It-To-Me cake.

After dinner, Tony Law & Amber Marsden conducted a challenging men vs. women pictionary/pantomime game with words/phrases on slips of paper written by players.  Three dollars was rewarded to each player on the winning team.  Taking turns, each player selected a slip of paper & attempted to draw or pantomime the word or phrase.  The women won the most correct guesses & utilized their $3 to play the next game.

The next game was the ever-popular 3-dice-left/right/center/dot.  Several tables were lined up together and players surrounded the tables.  Everyone began w/$3.  As the dice were passed around & around, lots of exciting encouragement was heard such as “Center! Center! Center!”  In the end, the lone person still holding $1 was the winner of the “Center” pot and that winner turned out to be the birthday gal, Amber.  Congratulations!

When the party concluded, everyone assisted in sweeping the floor, wiping off the tables/counter, putting things away and arranging the tables/chairs back in order.  Thanks, everyone, for helping to set up & clean up.

The following morning prior to checking out of Casa Via Mar, members/guests played several rounds of Scramble Tennis.  Before heading home, some members went to the Sea Fresh Restaurant located in the Channel Islands Harbor a short distance away from Casa Via Mar.  Following lunch, members strolled through the nearby “Farmer’s Market” held every Sunday.  Available were fresh vegetables/fruits/flowers, fresh baked breads of all flavors, alluring kettle popcorn, and various arts & hand-crafted jewelry.

SGTC Port Hueneme weekend was arranged by James Brentzel.  Attending were:  James Brentzel, Tony Wong, Tri Kha, Mel Cabral, Anna Gee, Ko Nakamura, Isabel Sun, Amber Marsden, Mike Lu, Andrew Hwang, Xiu Wu, James & Jessica Wang, Tony Law, Martin & Tina Law, Kathy & Rick Janisch, Simon Tieu and his brothers, Allen & Vincent; & Simon’s parents.  Pete Tapia and Linda Matsumoto from Monterey Park joined the SGTC group Saturday afternoon at Oxnard Tennis Center.  Again, SGTC members enjoyed a fun tennis get-away.  Come join us next year!
